ABOUT & INFORMATION

Editorial Policy

This Editorial Policy explains how Settora researches, writes, updates, and corrects practical guides for foreign residents in Japan.

Editorial purpose

Settora exists to make everyday systems in Japan easier to understand in English. We cover housing, city hall procedures, healthcare, jobs, money, residence-status procedures, Japanese basics, and daily life. The goal is not to reproduce an authority’s wording. The goal is to help readers identify the correct procedure, documents, timing, decision points, and official source for the task in front of them.

Source hierarchy

For factual claims about public procedures, law, tax, social insurance, healthcare systems, employment rules, immigration, and official deadlines, Settora gives priority to primary and authoritative sources. These can include Japanese ministries and agencies, municipalities, public institutions, official operators, and official provider documentation when a statement concerns that provider’s own service.

Secondary sources can be useful for context, but they should not override a current primary source on a rule, fee, deadline, or eligibility requirement.

National rules and local variation

Japan has procedures that are national in principle but administered locally. Municipal forms, accepted documents, office hours, local subsidies, waste rules, and implementation details can differ. Settora aims to distinguish a nationwide rule from a local example and to direct readers to their own municipality or responsible authority when local confirmation is necessary.

High-impact topics

Guides involving immigration, health, tax, employment rights, public benefits, contracts, or other consequential decisions are informational. They are not individualized legal, immigration, medical, tax, or financial advice. When the correct answer depends on a reader’s personal facts, the guide should explain what needs to be confirmed and identify the appropriate authority or qualified professional.

Article structure and practical value

Settora articles may use a consistent visual structure so readers can scan them quickly. A shared layout is not intended to make different topics interchangeable. Each guide should answer a specific reader task, include procedure-specific decision points, identify meaningful exceptions, and link to the sources needed to verify time-sensitive facts.

Related Guides are selected to help a reader continue to the next relevant task. Official References are provided when authoritative verification is important. These sections should support the main guide rather than replace original explanation.

Dates, maintenance, and updates

Article pages display an updated date. We revise a guide when a material rule, fee, deadline, service process, official link, or practical step changes. A guide can remain useful between updates, but readers should use the linked authority for a decision where timing or personal eligibility matters.

Corrections

When a factual error or materially outdated instruction is identified and verified, the aim is to correct it rather than preserve an older statement. Readers can report an issue through the Contact page. Please include the article URL and, if possible, the official source supporting the correction.

Affiliate and commercial independence

Some pages contain affiliate links. Commercial relationships do not determine the factual rule or procedure explained in a guide. A paid service should only be presented where it is relevant to the reader’s task, and readers should be able to understand the underlying procedure without purchasing a product or service.

Provider prices, availability, eligibility, and contract terms can change independently of Settora. Readers should confirm current terms with the provider. See the Affiliate Disclosure.

Reader responsibility and official confirmation

Settora is designed to reduce confusion, not to replace the organization that makes the final decision. Immigration authorities decide residence-status matters, municipalities administer local procedures, insurers determine coverage, employers and labor authorities handle employment matters, and medical professionals make clinical decisions. For a consequential action, use the official source linked in the guide and confirm any fact that may have changed.
