Settora is a practical English-language guide for foreign residents building everyday life in Japan. We focus on the moments where a clear next step matters: finding housing, completing city hall procedures, using healthcare, understanding work and pay, managing money, handling residence-status procedures, and navigating daily services.
What Settora is for
Official information in Japan is often accurate but distributed across national agencies, municipalities, public institutions, and individual service providers. Rules can also differ by location or by a reader’s residence status, employment situation, household, or provider. Settora’s role is to turn that fragmented information into practical English guidance while keeping the important limits and exceptions visible.
Our guides are written for readers who need to understand what to check, which document or office matters, what order to do things in, and when the official source must take priority. Settora does not replace an authority, licensed professional, medical professional, lawyer, tax adviser, or immigration specialist.
How we research guides
For procedures, legal rules, public benefits, healthcare systems, tax, employment, immigration, and other high-impact topics, our editorial standard is to prioritize primary and official sources. Depending on the subject, that can include Japanese government ministries and agencies, municipalities, public institutions, official service operators, and provider documentation for provider-specific facts.
Many Settora guides include an Official References section so readers can verify the underlying rule or continue to the authority responsible for their case. When a rule varies locally, the guide should identify that variation rather than present one municipality’s procedure as universal.
Updates and corrections
Japan’s fees, application methods, deadlines, eligibility rules, online systems, and service terms can change. We update guides when a meaningful change is identified and show an updated date on article pages. A visible date does not remove the need to check the linked authority for time-sensitive decisions.
If you find an outdated rule, broken official link, unclear explanation, or factual error, please use the Contact page. Including the article URL and the official source that supports the correction helps us review it efficiently.
Commercial relationships
Some Settora pages contain affiliate links to services that may help a reader complete a relevant next step. An affiliate relationship does not change the factual procedure described in an article and does not make a service suitable for every reader. Prices, eligibility, service areas, contract terms, and availability should always be checked with the provider before applying or purchasing.
See the Affiliate Disclosure for more information.
