ABOUT & INFORMATION

Life Services in Japan

This page is for optional services that can help with a practical next step in Japan. Start with the relevant Settora guide so you understand the procedure first. A paid service is not automatically necessary, and the lowest advertised price is not always the lowest total cost.

Affiliate disclosure: Settora may receive a commission when you use some links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships do not change the factual guidance in Settora articles. Eligibility, prices, availability, service areas, and contract terms are controlled by each provider and can change.

Before using any service

  • Confirm that the service accepts your residence status, documents, payment method, and location.
  • Compare total cost, not only the first-month or campaign price.
  • Check contract length, renewal, cancellation, return, and refund conditions.
  • Confirm what support is actually available in English and during which hours.
  • Keep the application confirmation, contract terms, receipts, and cancellation instructions.

Housing

Housing services can be useful when you need an English-language application route, flexible contract length, furnished accommodation, or a property that is accustomed to foreign residents. Before applying, compare the monthly total, initial fees, guarantor requirements, minimum stay, renewal conditions, utilities, internet, house rules, and move-out charges.

Read the apartment-search guide and initial-cost guide first.

Mobile phone and Japanese phone number

Choose by the type of number and service you actually need. A data-only SIM or eSIM is different from a voice plan with a Japanese 070/080/090 number. Check device compatibility, identity verification, activation, data allowance, call charges, MNP support, normal monthly price after campaigns, and cancellation terms.

Internet and temporary connectivity

Home fiber, home 5G, mobile routers, and temporary rental connectivity solve different problems. Compare address coverage, installation work, contract length, expected speed, data limits, router requirements, setup time, cancellation fees, and equipment-return rules. If you are moving soon, a long fixed contract may not be the best fit.

International money transfers

Do not compare transfer fees in isolation. The exchange rate, receiving fee, transfer speed, supported currencies, identity-verification requirements, limits, and receiving method can change the effective cost. For larger transfers, compare the actual amount the recipient will receive.

When you may not need a paid service

City hall registration, public insurance procedures, tax filings, immigration applications, and many other official processes have direct government or public routes. A commercial service should not replace the responsible authority when the decision is made by that authority. Use Settora’s Set Up Your Life in Japan hub or the category guides to identify the official route first.
